Definition of a Social Enterprise
"A Social Enterprise is a businesses set up to tackle social, economic or environmental issues and engaging in activities of a commercial nature in order to produce social and community gain.
Social enterprise does and can play an important role in Irish society. It engages in commercial activity in order to provide services that would not otherwise be provided (i.e. it addresses market failures):
- to support disadvantaged groups and communities
- to address environmental challenges
- to regenerate urban and rural areas
- and to support labour market activation
